Best of Willow Glen

Welcome to Best of Willow Glen!
Find Bella!
In case you haven't heard this story yet, Bella is a Shibu Inu who was walking down the street with her owner when they were attacked by a loose pit bull. In the fracus her owner was injured and Bella managed to slip her collar and get away. Now she's roaming the streets over near Capitol and Monterey and sometimes around Coyote creek. nobody could try harder to find their beloved pet and Bella's owners are asking for people to help try to spot her. Can't you take a few minutes and help too? HEY...if anyone has any time today &/or tomorrow to drive around in your air conditioned car (!!), no matter how short a time frame, please call terri (bella's mom) 891-4239. there was a confirmed bella sighting this morning, she's apparently staying in the area she's been since May 8. we're extra worried because of this heat wave. the person that spotted her said she's lost a lot of weight, but otherwise seemed OK from what they could see. i'm hoping bella's smart enough to head back down to the creek for water!! additionally, if you know anyone who lives in the tully/capital/stonegate park area...or any of the other "hot spots" marked on "bella central" please have them keep their eyes peeled. THANKS!! new bella info on craigslist: http://sfbay.craigslist.org/sby/pet/681782492.html Warning DO NOT CHASE HER OR TRY TO CATCH HER! Bella's had a very traumatic few weeks and the more people who chase her the more danger she may be in. Put her owner's number in your cell phone and call them if you see her. Stay in the area but don't scare her off. Write Comment (0 Comments)

Join Team Willow Glen!

Did you know that the Bay Area has some of the highest incidence of breast cancer in the country? Wanna do something about it? The Avon walk is in July and there is a “team Willow Glen” set up for those of us who want to help.
We'll walk 40 miles in two days to raise money to fight breast cancer. And the funds are mostly distributed locally to care centers around the bay area. People who might not otherwise afford care will gt it because of thousands of women like us who are walking to raise money to fight this demoralizing and deadly disease.

You can join team Willow Glen here:

We are going to be doing some training walks soon, and also some local fundraising. We even have a rock band that will donate their time if we can find a venue. If you'd like to join us, or have an idea to raise more money, let me know

Where does the money go? Click here to see the official word.

The Avon Foundation has provided over $19.2 million since 2000 in support in San Francisco and the northern California region to support programs including:

* The Avon Foundation Comprehensive Breast Center at San Francisco General Hospital to provide state-of-the-art breast care services to underserved populations.
* 8 public hospitals or community health centers in the region to provide “safety net” breast care services to uninsured, underserved, and minority women.
* 8 clinical trials at institutions in the region to prevent, treat, or stop the recurrence of breast cancer.
* Direct financial support to 1,259 low-income women undergoing breast cancer treatment in northern California.
* 2 community-based organizations, which in 2007 will link 2,122 under-served women into mammography screening and educate 30,142 about breast cancer.

Persian restaurant opens in Willow Glen
Wahoo! Willow Glen is getting a Persian restaurant. The space at 1180 Lincoln -which has had a string of failures- is due for a lift and perhaps the owners of San Francisco’s Maykadeh will avoid the curse. Judging from the menu it will add a nice touch of flavor to Willow Glen’s decidedly vanilla dining opportunities. They’re open now and their first brunch is today, stop by and then come back and tell us how it was!Write Comment (0 Comments)

Local Jeweler in the soup
It seems that one of the keystone businesses on Lincoln avenue has been defrauding their customers. According to NBC11's hometown pages, "Dan Mokma, the longtime owner of Willow Estates Jewelry in the Willow Glen neighborhood of San Jose, admits he sold poor quality diamonds to some of his customers. One customer, who bought diamond earrings from Mokma, says he was sold cubic zirconia." MSNBC covered the story as well, and says Mokma is willing to give his customers their money back, give them a better stone, or trade it for something else. Whether it was actually a fake diamond or not may be irrelevant now. Mokuma admits selling diamonds that are of lesser quality than he valued them at, so who's going to buy from him now?Write Comment (0 Comments)

Change in Willow Glen
.

By now Everybody knows about the old Albertson's turning into a Fresh and Easy store, hopefully sometime this summer. Did you also know that the Safeway on the corner of Curtner and Almaden will be closing in the next 3 months? Rumors say they are closing for good or they are remodeling. We're still trying to verify which. New shops are going up near Curtner and Lincoln as well. We know that an Ace Hardware will be moving into the old antique store, but no news yet about the location across the street..

Another store moving in is Domus, the familiar Los Gatos Kitchen store. Some of the local merchants are beefing that Domus is requesting exclusivity on some of the items already sold to Lincoln ave stores. If that's true it's a little too “big city muscle” for these girls.

Lastly Siena on Lincoln Ave. has changed ownership and word is the food's a nice step up from the old traditional stuff there before. We weren't so thrilled with the change at Vin Santo, where both the food and the service are mediocre, but Siena seems pretty darn good. Check it out.
